MRS. SLOAN

As a St. Cecilia alumna, I have a deep respect for the opportunity Catholic schools represent since I went to St. Cecilia. I'm honored to be a part of students' development and educational journey.  The 2015-16 school year is my 5th year as a kindergarten teacher. I graduated from Iowa State in 2010 with a degree in elementary education with endorsements in English/language arts, reading & am currently working towards my Master's degree.

Founded in 1925, our school strives to fulfill our mission statement: in partnership with families, Saint Cecilia School creates a Catholic Christian community that stimulates individual academic excellence while promoting cultural and spiritual awareness in a disciplined, safe environment.

ST. CECILIA

Kindergarten was created by Frederich Froebel in 1837 in Germany. His educational philosophy stressed creativity and play to nurture young children. Though times and curriculums have changed, this emphasis on nurturing and celebrating individual development remains a hallmark of our educational experience today.

KINDERGARTEN

In addition to our literacy program, we have a specific sight word and letter we focus on each week. The letter of the week helps guide phonics and writing activities. Please refer to our schedule as we do not go in alphabetical order. Sight words are high frequency words found in texts. The words we study are taken from the Dolch word list as the most common words seen in print. You will likely hear students refer to them as popcorn words since they pop out of the page at us. The words build on each other to help create positive reading behaviors such as fluency and confidence. Each week, we will focus on one sight word for our word of the week. Parents can help students by posting the word of the week in a place where students can become familiar with it. Some possible spots include on mirrors, refrigerators, or the back of a headrest in a vehicle. Anywhere to help the student retain and remember the word. Parents can also help students learn the letter of the week by helping them practice writing it and looking for items that start with the letter sound.
