MRS. SLOAN

As a St. Cecilia alumna, I have a deep respect for the opportunity Catholic schools represent since I went to St. Cecilia. I'm honored to be a part of students' development and educational journey.  The 2015-16 school year is my 5th year as a kindergarten teacher. I graduated from Iowa State in 2010 with a degree in elementary education with endorsements in English/language arts, reading & am currently working towards my Master's degree.

Founded in 1925, our school strives to fulfill our mission statement: in partnership with families, Saint Cecilia School creates a Catholic Christian community that stimulates individual academic excellence while promoting cultural and spiritual awareness in a disciplined, safe environment.

ST. CECILIA

Kindergarten was created by Frederich Froebel in 1837 in Germany. His educational philosophy stressed creativity and play to nurture young children. Though times and curriculums have changed, this emphasis on nurturing and celebrating individual development remains a hallmark of our educational experience today.

KINDERGARTEN

St. Cecilia uses the DRA or Developmental Reading Assessment school wide to help monitor students’ individual reading behaviors. This assessment gives students the opportunity to read and practice reading behaviors with a teacher. This assessment was developed by a group of classroom teachers in Ohio who successfully implemented this efficient & effective form of feedback. We will administer it three times throughout the school year. In the fall, the kindergarten assessment is over phonemic awareness, initial sounds, and rhyming words. In the winter and spring, students will receive instruction and support as they read independently based on their reading level. They will also respond to literature in a variety of ways. St. Cecilia also uses the state wide literacy assessment TIER or FAST. This assessment is online and helps monitor student progress in different areas throughout the school year. In kindergarten this assessment is mostly over pre-reading skills and indicators such as letter identification, letter sounds, reading nonsense words, and beginning sounds in words. We will also be implementing assessments over math that come from the Go Math! program our school is implementing this year.
